The Washington Elementary school library has been renamed in honor of the late JoAnn "Jody" Petry, who taught at the school for 46 years.
Petry's husband, Robert Petry, said his wife would have been greatly honored to have the library named for her.
Jody Petry was full of energy and enthusiasm and had terrific organization skills. She headed up the school's Mindcore Marathon fundraiser every year, which raised money to buy books for the school library and other needed items for teachers' classrooms. Jody Petry was also an active community volunteer, working at the Norsk Hostfest and Zoofari, among other ventures, and took an active interest in politics. She was also a participant in the Tough Enough To Wear Pink campaign sponsored by the Minot Family YMCA to raise cancer awareness.
Petry began her teaching career at the old Washington Elementary in 1967 and continued teaching at that school and at the new Washington, with a brief leave during her treatment for cancer, until she passed away last May.
Robert Petry said their two daughters, Terri Duchsherer and Traci Lund, their grandson James Duchsherer and granddaughter Harper Lund, also attended the dedication ceremony Thursday afternoon, along with other relatives.
"It's a great day," said Petry. "It's a good time of the year. The fact that they chose to do this at this time of year is like a Christmas present."
