Parents of students in the Minot Public Schools will no longer have to log on to website to check out the school lunch menu for the day or a concert date.
The school district invested $5,000 to have a company called Parentline design a free smartphone app that will provide all that information.
"The reaction has been only positive," said Craig Nansen, technology coordinator for the Minot Public Schools.
Nansen said the Minot Public Schools are responsible for updating the content on the app, which is available for download on iTunes and Google Play. It is available for Android and iPhone and can be used on a tablet as well.
"It brings all that content into one place," said Nansen.
In the past, parents who had a question about hot lunch or student activities or a child's grades or the school calendar had to actively search out that information on the school website. With the app, it can be found within seconds. In some cases, the app will contain a link to a site that has more information, said Nansen.
Nansen said the district decided to invest in the app to make things more convenient for the public. Other schools in the state, including Devils Lake, Ellendale, Oakes, Beulah and Washburn also have apps through the same company, he said.
Nansen said improvements will be made in the future. As the app is expanded, parents will eventually be able to subscribe to a particular school to get more specific information about what is going on in their child's day. The expansion should be in place by the next school year, he said.
Nansen said a link to the app is also available on the school district website at (www.minot.k12.nd.us).
