Lorraine Helwig, 76, Powers Lake, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at her home. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake. Burial will be at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Coulee. Visitation is today, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.
Lorraine Charlotte Hanson was born on July 8, 1937, on the Smith Family Farm in Lucy Township, Burke County, the daughter of Frank Thomas and Irene Marie (Smith) Hanson. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Coulee. Lorraine attended Clayton Country School through eighth grade and then attended Bowbells High School.
On Aug. 31, 1954, Lorraine was united in marriage to Roger Helwig at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells. The couple made their home on the Helwig Family Farm in Crowfoot Township, Mountrail County, from 1954 until 2007, when they retired and moved to Powers Lake. To this union six children were born, Sandra Kae, LuCinda Gae, Ronald Eugene, Tamara Rae, Julie Ann and Konni Lynn.
On the farm, Lorraine worked side by side with Roger at harvest, driving truck, hauling and unloading the grain. In addition there were eggs to pick, chickens to butcher, meat to wrap, gardening to tend to and numerous other tasks involved with the farming and ranching business, all while tending to the needs of her family.
Lorraine was active in her church, enjoyed volunteering at Medora, helping anyone in need and attending the Norsk Hostfest in Minot every year.
Survivors include: her loving husband of 59 years, Roger, of Powers Lake; brother, Frank Hanson Jr., of Bowbells; five children, Sandra (Bruce) Brink, of Thief River Falls, Minn., Cindy Johnson (special friend Marty), of Kenmare, Ron (Loretta) Helwig, of Donnybrook, Julie (Ward) Heidbreder, of Stanley, Konni (Jerry) Nelson, of Minot; 16 grandchildren, Alyssa (Spencer) Homan, of Fairbury, Ill., Shawna Johnson, of Thief River Falls, Minn., Brett Johnson (Lauren Dondelinger), of Baudette, Minn., Tara (Jimmy) Rhoads, of Dayton, Ohio, Andrea (CJ) Vroman, of Stanley, Celeste Topolski, of Kenmare, Kaley Helwig, of Drayton, Riley Helwig, of Donnybrook, Chyler Helwig, of Donnybrook, Jordan Ridl, of Minot, Brandon Helwig, of Westminster, Colo., Brenna Heidbreder, of Stanley, Matthew Heidbreder, of Stanley, Jerod Nelson, of Grand Forks, Joshua Nelson, of Minot, Kirstin Nelson, of Minot; 12 great-grandchildren, William, Eli, Joseph, Taelynn, Katelyn, Lauryn, Justine, Nikolia, Kennedy, Addison, Jeramyah, Izayah; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Tamara Rae Helwig Ridl; parents, Frank and Irene Hanson; sisters, Arlene Morrison, Constance Hanson, Phyllis Christensen; and sister-in-law, Marla (Frank Jr.) Hanson.
