Caryl J. Hieb, 68, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, while on a cruise to Alaska.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at Turtle Lake Baptist Church.
Caryl was born Aug. 23, 1945, in Turtle Lake, to Bill and Helen (Westerlind) Schlafmann. She attended school and spent her childhood in Turtle Lake, and later continued her education at Bismarck Junior College. Caryl married Ron Hieb on May 28, 1965, and together they had two children, Shelly and Ryan. Ron and Caryl lived in Minot and later Bismarck, where Caryl was employed as a legal secretary. In 1990, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where Caryl worked for the Arizona state Legislature. She later worked with Ron at his financial consulting firm. After moving back to North Dakota and living there for several years, Caryl had recently moved back to Phoenix and was enjoying the warm winters there. Caryl will be remembered for her determined spirit, her sense of humor, her infectious laugh and her love for her family. She will be greatly missed.
Caryl is survived by: one son, Ryan (Diana) Hieb; one daughter, Shelly (Mike) Harrington; three grandchildren, Alex Harrington, Kayla Harrington and Mia Hieb; two brothers, Wayne and Ronnie Schlafmann, both of Turtle Lake; one sister, Lorie Schlafmann of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband (Ron Hieb).
