Joseph B. Schmalz, 59, Minot, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, in his home.

Joseph Brian Schmalz was born March 25, 1954, the eighth of 11 children born to Joseph and Catherine (Ganje) Schmalz, in Minot. The family lived in Karlsruhe until 1957, when they moved to Minot. Joe attended St. Leo's Elementary School, Bishop Ryan High School and Minot High School, where he participated in football and wrestling.

On March 27, 1972, Joe enlisted in the Navy. He proudly served his country at a Naval base in San Diego. Following his discharge, Joe returned to Minot, and began cabinet building and woodworking.

In August of 1974, Joe was united in marriage to Debra Lansverk. To this union a son, Joseph Aaron Schmalz, was born. In August 1978, Joe suffered a permanent spinal cord injury as a result of a diving accident in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Following several months of rehab at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, he returned to Minot, where he studied media broadcasting at Minot State University. Joe became a radio disc jockey at local stations during the 1980s. He retired due to health reasons relating to his injury.

Raised in an honest and hardworking family, Joe appreciated and placed value in, not only one's will, but the determination to always progress. Joe enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor and friend. He had extensive knowledge and an appreciation for music and arts. He enjoyed attending concert music festivals, especially at Cross Ranch and Telluride, Colo. Joe was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

His loving family includes: sons, Joseph (Kim) Schmalz, Minot, Casey (Wendy) Graves, Surrey; grandchildren, Jillian Schmalz, Madeline Schmalz, Aaron Gyles, Taylor Gyles and Katlin Gyles; brothers, Ben (Donna) Schmalz, Minot, Loren Schmalz, Minot; sisters, Elaine (Chuck) Hall, of Florida, Cathie (Bob) Elton, of North Carolina, Judie (Jim) Mello, Minot, Vicki (John) Martinson, Minot, Julie (Frank) DeGroat, Surrey, Mary Carlson, Minot; 22 nieces and nephews; 33 great-nieces and great-nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Adrian Schmalz; sister, Louise Richards and a brother-in-law, Carl Nichols.

Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Today, July 31, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil prayer service: Today at 7 p.m. in Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.
