MANDAN - The Minot Vistas dropped a pair of non-statewide standings games to the Mandan Chiefs on Thursday.
Hard-throwing Demitry Zafra's control issues continued as he gave up eight runs and walked five in an 11-9 loss. Zafra dropped to 2-5. Jake Magnuson was 2 for 3 to lead the Vistas (21-15) with three RBIs as their rally fell short. Minot outhit Mandan 14-7, but made four errors to fall for the third time in four tries against the Chiefs this season.
"Demitry just continues to struggle with his control a little bit," Vistas coach Todd Larson said. "Absolutely, it's very fixable. He's working hard at it. I think he'll see some results. ... Got a lot of confidence in the kid that he can change things up."
Grant Larson fell to 2-2 on the mound as Mandan took the second game 6-1. The Vistas scored in the first inning, but Alex Weiand held the visitors to just four hits in his complete game. The Chiefs scored three runs in both the first and second innings, before Larson settled in and reliever Shawn Danielson threw well in the final three frames.
"The kid on the hill was nothing special, we just didn't swing at it well," Larson said.
Minot travels to Dickinson for a doubleheader with the Roughriders at 7 p.m. Monday.
