Dale Myron Zieman, 82, Minot, formerly of Makoti, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Trinity Nursing Home, Minot.

Dale was born on May 20, 1931, in Plaza, the son of Theodore and Christy (Smith) Zieman.

Dale graduated from Makoti High School at the age of 16 in 1948. He later attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., graduating in 1960. He began graduate school at North Dakota State University in 1963 and received a Master of Science in Chemistry in 1966.

After high school, Dale went to trade school and worked in Chicago as a machinist, before returning to farm for several years in Mountrail Township. He then joined the Army in 1954, and on Feb. 12, 1955, he married Delores Downie at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Augusta, Ga. Dale and Delores lived in Verdun, France, until he completed his military service. Dale and Delores lived in Minnesota while he completed his degree in chemistry at Concordia College and returned to North Dakota in 1960. They later lived in various places in North Dakota; Fargo, Bottineau, Dickinson, and New Town.

They spent 20 years living in Dickinson, where he was a chemistry professor at Dickinson State College. Dale and Delores then spent five years living in New Town, where he taught science at Fort Berthold Community College before moving to Tallahassee, Fla., in 1991, where he taught chemistry at Tallahassee Community College.

He retired in 1998 and they began to spend summers in Makoti, and then moved to Lakeland, Fla., in 2000. Delores preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 2007. He then returned to live in N.D. and resided first in Makoti and then later in Minot.

Dale loved educating people and was a lifelong teacher. He had a pleasant sense of humor and was a happy spirit. He was active in professional societies; the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the North Dakota Education Association. He loved to fly private aircraft and became very active in the Civil Air Patrol and conducted aerospace education workshops to expose the world of aviation to educators. He was an active American Legion member at various posts. He was a member and supported the National Wildlife Federation throughout his life. He was a Nature Conservancy member. He enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader. He was active in many activities and leadership at the ALC/ELCA churches in the communities of his residence. He enjoyed spending time in many activities and adventures with family.

He liked to travel and explore new places and foods, particularly with Delores. He also loved gardening, bird-watching, fishing, and hunting. He purchased and remodeled many homes over the years, always using the saying "Perfect is good enough." His craftsmanship demonstrated this.

His joy of living and generous spirit touched all who knew him. Dale continued to maintain his positive outlook and humorous spirit, impacting many people in the last months of his life at Edgewood Vista, Trinity Hospital, Trinity Homes and the people with hospice.

His was a life well spent.

He is survived by: his children, Susan (Dean) Thompson, Minot, and their children, Megan (Luke) Brandt, Missoula, Mont., Ian and Cullan Thompson, Minot; Jonathan (Mary Beth Seasholtz) Zieman, and their children, Tabor, Mitchell, and Roscoe Zieman, all of Sanford, Mich.,; Pamela Zieman (Nancy Mahan), Culbertson, Mont., and their children, Robert and Florence; Carolyn Zieman (Ken Kendall), Sun Valley, Nev., and child, James Zieman, Gernandt, Texas; great-grandchildren, Tia, Coco, Jada, Shamarye, Meiko, and Chrisma; Dale's siblings, Marvel Petrick, Minot, Robert (Shirley) Zieman, Plaza, James (Doris Ann) Zieman, Makoti, Joan Zahnow, Minot, Marcia Goodwin, Makoti, and Phyllis (Walter) Skrainy, Chicago; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ronald Kolden, Carrington, Evelyn Downie, Havre, Mont., Shirley Zieman, of Lacey, Wash., Connie Treiber, Waite Park, Minn., Lois (Gene) Lohse, Minot; and well over 50 nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Zieman; parents, Ted and Christy Zieman; brothers, Floyd Zieman and Lyle Zieman; parents-in-law, Jack and Esther Downie; sisters-in-law, Doris Barta, Diana Kolden, Eileen Zieman, Janice Larson, and Joyce Nordwall; brothers-in-law, Thomas Downie, Darold Downie and Jackie Downie.

Funeral Service: The service is scheduled for 10 a.m., July 10, 2013, at Bread of Life Lutheran Church, Minot, with interment at Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Makoti, at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation: Will be today, July 9, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Family service: Will be today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials: Are preferred to Bread of Life Playground Fund, Minot, Camp of the Cross Capital Campaign, Makoti Senior Citizen Center, or the charity of the donor's choice.
