The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 4:16, Tuesday afternoon, citing rotation indicated on its radar as cause for the alert. A severe thunderstorm capable of producing the phenomenon was located 27 miles southeast of Minot, near the town of Ruso and moving northward from there at 10 miles per hour. The NWS cautioned residents in McHenry and Ward counties to take cover immediately, avoiding windows if possible.
As a precautionary measure, Minot Police Department confirmed that Jefferson Elementary School had been opened to vulnerable residents as a tornado shelter. Although a tornado failed to materialize, a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until midnight, earlier this morning, accompanied by high winds and hail.
