NO NEED TO CUT NUKES President Barack Obama's proposal to reduce the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile quickly ran into opposition from some members of Congress, including North Dakota's delegation. Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and Rep. Kevin Cramer have all denounced Obama's proposal. All three lawmakers said that at a time when other nations including Pakistan, Iran and North Korea are building up their nuclear weapons programs, the United States should not be reducing its nuclear force. Hoeven said reducing the U.S.'s weapons stockpile could encourage other countries to continue to build their nuclear arsenals, while Heitkamp said the U.S. not only needs to maintain the current number of nuclear weapons, but also work to modernize the force. All of North?Dakota's congressional members are right to oppose Obama's proposal. It's ill-timed, at best, and certainly isn't in the best interests of the nation.
