The Minot Fire Department will begin testing and flushing certain neighborhood fire hydrants beginning Tuesday and ending in September. These actions will only be performed on Tuesdays between 8:30 a.m. and noon. All residents of the 2011 Souris River flood zone should check their water those mornings before use.
While performing these flushes, iron deposits in the water lines become disturbed and may create a brown tint to the water, which will be detrimental to a "whites" laundry load, for example. The brown color should run itself out within a few hours of the tests and it is safe to drink and cook with even while brown.
On Tuesdays, if your area is affected, the fire department recommends you flow your cold water for a while before using it to see if it has become discolored.
Notification for which areas are to be affected by the testing will be printed in the calendar of The Minot Daily News.
