GRAND FORKS - Minot High School senior Megan Sherven and seventh-grader Jenna Coggins won their first two doubles matches at the individual state tournament Friday to earn a spot in the semifinals.
The pair will play the Bismarck St. Mary's tandem of Alicia Beck and Mary Roller, the No. 1 seed from the West Region. Two teams from state powerhouse and team champion Grand Forks Red River will meet in the other semifinal.
Sherven and Coggins won a three-set match over a Valley City duo in round one before rolling past a Mandan pair 6-4, 6-1 in their second match.
"They're playing awfully well," MHS coach Scott DeLorme said. "They got a little help when the Mandan team upset the No. 2 team from the east, but they still took care of business."
The Majettes' other state-qualifying doubles team - juniors Ban Dodin and Katie Wilson - went 1-1 Friday and need to win three matches to finish fifth.
Before the individual tournament began, the Majettes finished fourth in the team event. St. Mary's topped MHS 4-1, with the No. 1 doubles team of Coggins and Latasha Klein
