GRAND FORKS - The Minot High School girls tennis team won its first-round matchup but lost to 11-time defending state champion Grand Forks Red River on Thursday at the state tournament.
Minot, the No. 2 seed from the West, topped East No. 3 Valley City 3-2 but lost to GFRR 4-1. The Majettes play West No. 1 Bismarck St. Mary's at 9 a.m. today for third place.
MHS junior Kendra Collins and senior Cally Sessions secured a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over Valley City's Destiny Winkler and Cassidy Fulton to clinch the win. Junior Ban Dodin and senior Megan Sherven took straight-set wins at the top two singles spots.
Sherven and Sessions paired up at No. 2 doubles for Minot's lone win over Red River. The Roughriders won the rest of the matches in straight sets, and Minot (10-6) didn't get closer than 6-2 in any of those sets.
