Arnold Groninger, 84, Minot, died Monday, May 20, at the home of his good friend and sister-in-law, LaVonne Nice, in Minot.
Arnold Lloyd Groninger was born Feb. 6, 1929, the son of William and Helen (Davis) Groninger, in Minot. He was raised on a farm south of Des Lacs. The family later moved west of Minot. He attended Minot Model High School, where he played football and basketball. He led his basketball team to consecutive state title victories in 1947 and 1948, and graduated in 1948.
Arnold married Marjorie L. Nice on Oct. 27, 1951, in Minot. They made their home in Minot and farmed in Burlington Township of Ward County, south of Des Lacs, for more than 60 years. Marjorie passed away Aug. 23, 1997.
Because of his love of being out at the farm, Arnold never truly retired. He was still actively farming up until last fall.
Surviving family includes: daughter, Connie (Jeff) Hall, of Roy, Utah; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jay) Harr, Abilene, Texas, and Allen Woiwode (Angela Jepperson), Odgen, Utah; great-grandchildren, Alex and Natasha Harr; sisters, Dorothy Isaakson, Longview, Wash., Joni Tofstad, Auburn, Wash., and Leona Kallias, Minot; brothers, Herbert (Isabelle) Groninger, of Douglas; a very special friend and companion, LaVonne Nice; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; infant son, Michael Allen Groninger; brother, Kenneth Groninger; and sister, Mary Rogers.
Funeral: Friday, May 24, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Today, May 23, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
