Sarah M. Brandt Benefiet, 89, of Bismarck, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013, at St. Vincent's Care Center in Bismarck.
A memorial service will be held today, May 22, 2013, at 1 p.m., in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Noonan, with Ethyl Mae Nelson, AIM officiating. Inurnment will follow at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.
She was born to David and Matilda Crawford on July 10, 1923, in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, the thirteenth of 15 children.
Reminiscing about her childhood, she often talked about the schoolhouse changing the big map every year as Germany kept growing. At age 18, Sarah joined the Royal Air Force and served until 1945, when she married Robert Brandt, an American GI, in France. The couple returned to Noonan, where they farmed and raised five children.
When the family moved to Minot, she worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and earned a master's degree from Minot State University. She taught special education in Mandan, Grafton and in South Dakota.
In 1980 she married Martin Benefiet, who passed away in 1995.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and 13 of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by: her sister, Olive, Toronto; daughters, Cheryl, Mandan, Linda, Bismarck, and Robin, of Houston; sons and daughter-in-law, David, Bismarck, and Delane and Mary, Jamestown; grandchildren, Rebecca, Melissa, Robert, Erich, Elizabeth and Brendan; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
As a farm wife, hospital secretary, teacher, co-owner of the Ramp Bar, Radisson worker and finally, price-tagger at Dave's hobbies, Sarah lived up to the title "greatest generation" and will be riding her bike through the country roads of Northern Ireland soon.
Stakston-Martin Funeral Home of Crosby is in charge of arrangements.
