Barbara R. Esser, 98, Minot, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, April 6, 2013, in her home.

Barbara was born Oct. 7, 1914, on the family farm in Pierce County, near Rugby, to Math and Margaret (Bohl) Schneider. She was raised and attended school in Rugby and graduated from Rugby High School. Following graduation she moved to Minot where she did housecleaning until she married.

Barbara married Lawrence A. Esser on Nov. 21, 1939, at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. Following their marriage they made their home on the family farm, near Burlington, where she was a homemaker and raised their eight children. They later lived in Foxholm and Carpio before moving to Minot in the 1960s.

While living in Minot she worked at various places, including Trinity Homes, Minot High School-Central Campus, Green Thumb Greenhouse, Piggly Wiggly and SunMart grocery stores. Lawrence passed away on Aug. 25, 1975.

Barbara had a "gift to gab," so she never had a problem talking to people or expressing her opinion with "Letters to the Editor" or letters published in the REA magazine.

She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and her Catholic faith was very important to her. For the past 18 years her dog, "Polly," was her true companion.

Barbara was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, all in Minot.

Those who shared in her life: son, Gregory (Shannon) Esser, Moore, Idaho; daughters, Darlene (David) Barnett, Minot, Lorayne (Dennis) Slaga, Cornell, Mich., and Rosemary (Arthur L.) Grosz, Casper, Wyo.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Magdelena "Lena" Voeller, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Esser; grandsons, Christopher Barnett, Allen Esser and Scott Slaga; granddaughter, Treasure Esser; her parents, Math and Margaret Schneider; brother, John Schneider; sisters, Julia Schneider and Sister Eva Schneider.
