Darlene Hovland, 81, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Gold Canyon, Ariz.
She was born Nov. 10, 1931, in Northwood, to Selma (Kloster) and Henry Hanson. She graduated from Northwood High School and was then employed by the First National Bank of St. Paul, Minn.
Darlene married her husband of 63 years, Harvey Hovland, on March 25, 1950. They farmed in the Northwood area for more than 40 years before retiring to Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Surprize, Ariz.
Darlene was very active in Ebenezer Lutheran Church and other community organizations. She saw only the good in others, and everyone she met was welcomed with a smile. Darlene lived a rich and full life centered around her family, and enjoyed golf, pottery, word puzzles and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by: her husband, Harvey; four children, Jackie (Bill) DeMars, Valerie Anderson, Kevin (Dawn) Hovland and Beth (Bryan) Wetzel; eight grandchildren, Tami, Misty, Alden, Robert, Madison, Aaron, Katie and Brittany; and six great-grandchildren, Rachel, Taylor, Halle, Brock, Sennett and Zenon.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Henry and Selma; brothers, Marvin, Harlan and Duane; and sister, Marlys Fransen.
Celebration of life and memorial services will be held in Northwood and Detroit Lakes, Minn., over the Memorial Day weekend.
