Marie Ganje was born April 25, 1925, on the family farm, rural Balfour, to Bernard and Elizabeth (Schiele) Ganje. She was raised and attended country school in that area.

Marie married Joseph C. Leier Jan. 7, 1943, in Karlsruhe. They made their home in Karlsruhe and in January of 1946, she and Joe began operating the Red Owl Store in Karlsruhe which they operated until 1970.

Following retirement Marie and Joe became winter residents of Yuma, Ariz., for 18 years. Marie and Joe moved to Somerset Court in Minot in October of 2006. Joe passed away May 16, 2012.
