Betty M. Vaagen, 71, Carpio, died Friday, March 22, 2013, in a Minot hospital.

Betty Mae Furulie was born Sept. 28, 1941, in Minot, to Alfred and Neva (Johnson) Furulie. Betty graduated from Carpio High School.

On Oct. 2, 1959, Betty married Lloyd Vaagen in Carpio. They made their home in Carpio, where she worked at Peterson's Grocery for many years. In 1985 they moved to Washington state, where she cared for her mother until she passed away. They returned to Carpio in 1995. Lloyd passed away on Feb. 27, 2001.

Betty was a member of the Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting. For many years she held painting classes at her studio in Carpio, and through that she made many friends over the years.

Betty loved her family, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were special to her, and she dearly loved her little companion, Riley. She will be deeply missed.

Those who shared in her life: Daughter, Lynae (Steve) Volk, Grenora; son, Corey Vaagen, Minot; grandchildren, Dustin, Dallas, Lane and Carly; great-grandchildren, Kobie and Veda; brother, Jack Furulie, of Morgan Hill, Calif.; sisters, Patricia (Bill) Snyder, Hermiston, Ore., Shirley Murphy and Charlotte Vaagen, both of Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents; and brother, Bob Snyder.

Memorial service: Monday, March 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the guest register Monday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Burial: A private burial will be held at a later date at Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery, rural Carpio.
