Stella Benson

Stella Benson, age 85, of Crosby, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Crosby.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby, with Pastor Rob Garton officiating. Burial will follow at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery in Crosby. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 6, at Stakston-Martin Funeral Home in Crosby, and one hour before the service at the church.

Stella was born Feb. 28, 1927, on the family farm near Fortuna, N.D., to Ole M. Olsen and Alma Paulson Olsen. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Crosby High School.

On May 2, 1947, she married Richard "Swede" Benson at Crosby. They farmed near Fortuna until moving into Fortuna in 1960. She worked at the Fortuna Air Base for several years and then worked as a clerk at the Fortuna Post Office. In 1980 they moved to Crosby. They entered the Good Samaritan Center in Crosby in 2011.

Stella's greatest joy was being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed many activities including dancing, fishing, camping, golfing and bowling. She was a proud cheerleader at her grandchildren's events.

She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church.

Stella was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Beth Brady; and grandson, Jason Bummer; her parents; and brothers, Oscar, Art, Martin, Edward, Selmer, and Richard; and sisters, Edna Loucks, Alma Gerard, Helen Hauge and Opal Riveland.

She is survived by: her husband of 65 years, Swede Benson, of Crosby, sons, Don (Judy), of Plentywood, Mont., Joel and Richard Jr. (Denise), Crosby, and daughter, Diane (Landy) Bummer, of Crosby; grandchildren, Kristi (Brad) Washburn, Joshua Bummer, Chad Benson (Anna), Matt (Sam) Benson, Justin Benson, Brant (Erin) Benson, Amanda (Shawn) Sundberg, Tessa (Lee) Rindel, Christopher Benson (Jessica), Drew Benson, Danny Benson, and Quinn Brady; great-grandchildren, Olive and Penny Washburn, Preston Benson, Kenley and Breckyn Sundberg; brother, Odean Olsen; sister, Clara Selle; sisters-in-law, Martha Olsen, Edith Olsen and Eleanor Olsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stella will be remembered by those who knew and loved her as a caring, sweet "Lady" who always put others before herself.
