Betty Lou Badke, 78, of Harvey, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, with her family by her side.

Betty Lou Kahle was born in LeSueur, Minn., Sept. 17, 1934, a daughter of Roy and Katherine (Westphal) Kahle. She was the tenth of 12 children. She had seven brothers and four sisters. Betty was raised and educated in LeSueur; she earned her general educational development diploma in Harvey.

On Jan. 24, 1954, Betty was united in marriage to Delbert (Del) Hans Badke. They made their home in Harvey. In November 1963, Betty went to work part time at St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey. In 1974, she became a full-time employee, starting as a nurse assistant, helping in the physical therapy and X-ray departments before transferring to activities. Betty said her favorite part of her job was working with the residents.

She retired in August 1996 after 22 years of service. Betty returned to the work force in 2005 for the Wells Sheridan Aging Meals and Bus as a dispatcher. She also worked for Hav-It Services as a senior companion.

Betty was involved in many activities throughout her life in Harvey. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and served as a chairperson of the church women's group. Betty was also a member of the Red Hats of Harvey. She was a member of TOPS for many years as well.

Betty received numerous volunteer awards over the years, including the President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation in January 2002.

Betty enjoyed several hobbies, which included crocheting, embroidery, reading, camping, fishing and baking.

She is survived by: sons, Fred (Resha) and Chuck (Terrie); grandchildren, Paul (Deana) Wells, Jason (Misty) Sabbe, Justin (Celeste), Chad (Jessica), and Cassondra Badke (Jon Kramer); eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Ilese (Bill) Murray and Shirley (Art) Fries; and her many friends whom she considered family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sharon McFarlen-Badke; grandson, Darrel Sabbe; brothers, Howard, Marvin, Earl, LeRoy, Joe, Donald and William; and sisters, Florence and Marrion.

Honorary pallbearers: Justin Badke, Chad Badke, Tim Kuhnhenn and Steve Plorin.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, however, friends may sign a guest register on Wednesday, Dec. 26, from noon to 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and on Thursday, Dec. 27, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial service: Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at First Lutheran Church, Harvey.

Graveside service: Thursday, 3 p.m., at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Memorials: May be made in Betty's honor to First Lutheran Church in Harvey.
