Viola Mummert, 91, Grand Forks, died Dec. 16, 2012, in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
Viola was born May 2, 1921, in McClusky, the daughter of Earl and Betty (Schindler) Bennett. She grew up and attended school in McClusky, graduating from McClusky High School. She then went on to attend Business College in Phoenix, Ariz. She then moved back to North Dakota, where she spent her time as a legal secretary in Bismarck and Minot.
On Nov. 17, 1941, Viola married Claude Mummert in Reno, Nev. They owned and operated several grocery stores in Towner, Washburn and Underwood. They also owned and operated a western store in Towner. Claude passed away on June 22, 1992.
Viola enjoyed spending time with her family. She liked to travel, going South during the colder months, even after Claude had passed away, and going to the ocean.
Viola is survived by: her daughters, Lynn (Jeremy) Pachl, of Thompson, Valarie (Sam) Hamlin, Sequim, Wash., and her granddaughter, Samantha Hamlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her brother Earl.
