As an educator, I am very concerned about the recommendations of Hamid Shirvani, the new chancellor of higher education for North Dakota. Our young people have always had the privilege of going to college without having to prove their ability to succeed in college. The proof is usually a timed test and it does not take into account the determination and desire of the student to succeed. I personally know two people who were told not to go to college because of those tests and both of them have master's degrees, one has two and they are both very successful in their field.
This morning, I had the opportunity to visit with a lady (a naturalized citizen) who has been encouraging our students to take advantage of the freedom we have in this country to get an education unlike Europe where many are denied that privilege.
By saying this, I am not saying that we should make our education easier but give those who desire to try to have the opportunity and with their determination to succeed or fail. Let it be their choice.
Please do not take this freedom from us.
