Martha Marie Johnson was born April 16, 1948, in Stanley, to Leon and Anet (Mahlum) Molzahn. She was the oldest of seven children and raised on the family farm outside of Ross. In 1966, she graduated from Stanley High School and furthered her education at Aakers Business College in Grand Forks.
Martha was blessed with two daughters, Rebecca Rae and Charlena Kae. She met the love of her life, Harley, in New Town and they were later married on April 5, 1980.
Martha had a 30-year career at Northrop Grumman in New Town and retired as the Manager of Finance and HR. During her tenure at Northrop, Martha earned her Senior Professional Human Resources certification and also served as president of Central Dakota Human Resources Association. Martha was awarded and bestowed the honor of statewide HR Professional of the Year in 2004.
Martha was very involved in her daughters' lives as well as various community organizations. She served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and a 4-H Leader while the girls were growing up. She later became the first female president of the Chamber of Commerce in New Town. She also was the secretary/treasurer of the New Town Marina Club. Martha served on the advisory board of the New Town Health Support Group. She was very active in the transition from Guardian Angels to Lakeside Community Living Center after which she also served as board member.
Martha enjoyed numerous activities throughout her life. She was an avid sportswoman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and earned her private pilot license in 1990. If she wasn't outside gardening, she could be found with friends quilting, sewing, or at bridge club. In addition to reading, league bowling, and traveling, Martha's diverse interests also included her passion for healing massage.
Martha was the current 9th District American Legion Auxiliary President and served as chairwoman of the Bethel Lutheran Church Board.
Harley and Martha were blessed with five precious grandchildren who forever changed their lives. They lived for the moment of experiencing together new adventures, making memories, and just loving life.
Martha is survived by: her husband, Harley Johnson; daughters, Rebecca Schuster and Charlena Weninger Vinglass; grandchildren, Christian Daniel and Ava Lorraine Schuster, sisters, Mary (Sam) Olivas, Betty (Lennin) Lidstrom, Shirley (Jim) Monger, Sharon Molzahn, and brother, Leon (Debbie) Molzahn Jr.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Leon V. and Anet (Mahlum) Molzahn, and her sister, Ilona Rossman.
Martha and her grandchildren, Benjamin John, Julia Rose, and Luke Kevin Schuster left their earthly home together on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012.
Funeral service for Martha: Scheduled for Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in New Town.
Community vigil: There will be a community vigil for family and friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, at Bethel Lutheran Church. There will be no public visitation.
Memorials: Will be directed to the Johnson Family Education Fund.
