Food drive makes a difference

November 15, 2012
Minot Daily News

The annual Freezin' for a Reason event plays an important role in helping those in need in the Minot area.

Minot State University's Social Work Organization has held the food drive and fundraiser for years in Minot. Members of the organization and other volunteers collect canned food and dried goods, as well as monetary donations which are given to the Minot Area Homeless Coalition. The students take turns spending time outside in cold weather as part of the event, to help them better understand at least one hardship experienced by homeless residents in the area.

With the ongoing recovery from the Souris River flood of 2011 and the continuing population boom in the area associated with the oil industry, the number of area residents needing help from food banks continues to grow. Dionne Spooner, adviser to the Social Work Organization, said the need for clothing and food is an all-time high.

The event will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Town and Country Center. We encourage everyone to stop by and make a contribution. The need in the area is growing, and the event is one way residents can help others.
