Jamestown tops Majettes in first round

MANDAN - The Jamestown High School volleyball team responded from a first-set loss to defeat Minot 3-1 Thursday in a West Region tournament quarterfinal at Mandan High School.

The second-seeded Blue Jays got 14 kills from Addie Eamon and 27 assists from Josie Hegerle in the 22-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-15 victory.

Aubrey Wunderlich led the seventh-seeded Majettes (15-19) with five kills, and senior Alex Bolinske added five aces and three blocks. Senior libero Jessie Kongelf tallied a match-high 26 digs.

Minot plays No. 6 seed Mandan in a loser-out game today at 3 p.m.

Donnie Schatz wins fifth series title

Tony Stewart Racing driver and Minot native Donny Schatz claimed his fifth World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship last Friday during the Peak Motor Oil World Finals at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Schatz placed sixth at Charlotte to clinch his first title since 2009, the last of four consecutive championships.

"This season has been one of the most rewarding ones of my career," Schatz said in a press release. "The key was sticking together through the tough times. We were all in this together and now we can celebrate as one."

Schatz finished the season strong, winning nine of his final 29 races along with nine second-place and 25 top-five finishes.

WSC men's team tops ranked opponent

WILLISTON - Williston State College sophomore Marquel Curtis had 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Tetons to a 71-64 victory over 24th-ranked North Idaho College.

Darwin Ellis knocked down 3-of-8 3-pointers en route to 17 points and Jordan Jackson added 11 points.

The Tetons (3-0) shot 45 percent from the field.

WSC hosts Dawson Community College tonight at 8.

State volleyball tickets on sale online

Tickets for the 2012 state volleyball tournament, which will be held Nov. 15-17 at the Minot State University Dome, went on sale Thursday.

The tickets can be purchased online at msudome.com, in the MSU athletic department office on the second floor of the dome or via walk-up sales beginning Thursday at 10:45 a.m.

All purchases are final and non-refundable.
