MANKATO, Minn. - The Minot State University women's soccer team beat No. 3 Minnesota State-Mankato in a penalty shootout Friday to advance to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship match.
The top-seeded Mavericks (16-2-2) were unbeaten in the NSIC during the regular season.
After a 90-minute regulation and two 10-minute overtimes left things tied at 1-1, Minot State scored on its first three penalty kicks while Mankato failed to find the goal twice in its first three attempts.
Mankato scored in the fourth round of kicks. MSU missed off the post. Mankato's fifth-round shot hit the post, giving MSU a 3-2 advantage in penalty kicks and the win.
Tara McPartland scored the Beavers' lone regulation goal. MSU senior goalkeeper Marie Torres had 13 saves.
The fourth-seeded Beavers play second-seeded Winona State Sunday at 1 p.m.
