Gordon H. Johnson, 86, Velva, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.

Gordon Harold Johnson was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Columbus, to George and Inga (Hassel) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm near Columbus and attended school there. Gordon worked for Consolidated Coal Company until he enlisted in the Army, where he served from 1950 to 1952. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Columbus and resumed working for Consolidated Coal Co.

Gordon married Janice Gardner, of Portal, on March 20, 1953. Following their marriage they made their home in Columbus. In 1972, they moved to Velva where he continued working for Consolidated Coal Co. Gordon was one of the longest-employed workers at Consolidated Coal Co., retiring from there in 1987. Gordon's wife, Janice passed away on April 7, 2006.

Gordon was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church and the American Legion, Post #39, both in Velva. Gordon was a member of the United Mine Workers of America International, Local #8957, in Velva, where he served as president, and was always very diligent in helping former miners with their retirement and pension benefits. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed obtaining coins for his friends and family in the community. He also enjoyed collecting Truax Traer Mine memorabilia. He put many miles on his car traveling to visit family throughout the years. Gordon loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed the times spent with them. He will always be remembered for his great care and compassion he showed to his family during their illnesses and in their time of need. He was a wonderful caregiver to his daughter, Jeanine, and his wife, Janice, during their illnesses.

Those who shared in his life: son, Darrel Johnson, Burlington; son-in-law, Laurence Anderson, Velva; grandchildren, Trevor, Tamary and Timothy Anderson; brother, Dean (Donella) Johnson, Bismarck; sisters, Evelyn Holte, of McGregor, and Ilene Hoff, Kenmare; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; daughter, Jeanine Anderson; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Johnson; his parents, George and Inga Johnson.

Funeral: Monday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Monday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m., at the Columbus Cemetery, Columbus.

Visitation: Monday, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
