Red River tops MHS for title

BISMARCK - On Friday, the Minot High School tennis team ran into the unstoppable force that is Grand Forks Red River.

The Roughriders won 4-1 at the Capital Racquet and Fitness Center to capture their 15th consecutive state title.

MHS coach Scott DeLorme switched his best player, senior Hunter Oothoudt, from No. 1 singles to No. 1 doubles. Junior Isaac Massey and senior Lane Vendsel moved up to No. 1 and No. 2 singles and senior Jordin Gardner was at No. 3 singles.

"I just thought if we can win at three singles, I knew we had to have some strong doubles teams," DeLorme said. "It strengthened our one doubles team and definitely strengthened our two doubles team."

The move didn't pay off. Gardner dropped two set points in the first set and ultimately lost his match. Seniors Peter Wilson and Landon Klein won at No. 2 doubles to prevent a sweep.

All four Magicians qualifiers were eliminated in the individual portion of the tournament, headlined by Oothoudt's lost. The West Region champion was upset by Fargo North's Andy Ficek. Oothoudt had beaten Ficek twice this season.

"I think it was a huge disappointment," DeLorme said. "Hunter would have loved to at least get into the semifinals and have a chance to get into the finals. Hunter made a few more unforced errors than he usually does. When you get to this tournament, if anybody has even a little bit of an off day, things can go south in a hurry."

Oothoudt will still have a chance to take fifth place in the tournament by winning two matches today.

Gardner lost his first singles match. The Klein-Foster and Vendsel-Wilson doubles teams were also eliminated.

Ryan beats Beulah in battle of region powerhouses

BEULAH - The Bishop Ryan Lions weren't intimidated by Beulah's undefeated record or its placement atop Class AA's West Region.

Ryan (6-1 overall, 5-0 region) scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half Friday to top the Miners, 30-22. Beulah (6-1, 4-1) didn't find the end zone in the second half after leading 22-16 at halftime.

"We shut them down the second half," Ryan coach Brad Borkhuis said. "I think it says a lot about the character of our kids. It was parents' night, it was a lot of things for them and we were disciplined about what we needed to do."

Senior Chase Fugere missed the first half for disciplinary reasons, but ran for 122 yards and a touchdown in the second half.

Borkhuis said a third-quarter fumble recovery by junior Tyler Allers sparked the offense.

"Our defense was aggressive," Borkhuis said. "They were on point."
