John Bearman, Minot
As a rancher who produces Angus cattle and raises miniature horses we know that North Dakotans treat animals with respect. We take care of the land and the animals. We do not abuse them. It's time for North Dakota's laws to reflect North Dakota's values, and to punish the most extreme acts of animal cruelty-such as burning, crushing, suffocating, impaling and dismembering animals-as more than just a slap on the wrist.
Measure 5 will be on the ballot this November and I encourage all North Dakotans to vote yes. Measure 5 would provide felony penalties for anyone that tortures dogs, cats and horses.
This measure would not affect our North Dakota heritage of hunting, fishing, and farming. The farmers and ranchers who work with livestock would not be affected. Measure 5 only covers dogs, cats, and horses, and includes specific exemptions for agriculture, hunting, and other common and traditional practices. Please vote yes on Measure 5 as it's the right thing for our state!
