BINFORD (AP) - A rural Griggs County ballpark that has hosted thousands of young players is closing this month.
Rising water is starting to make one of the two diamonds at the Red Willow Lake Resort unplayable. Resort owner Vernis Haines says softball tournaments can't be held on only one field.
The 90-year-old Haines says this weekend's tournament will be the last. She says they've been held since the early 1950s, when she and her husband Bill bought the resort and fixed up the ball diamonds. Bill Haines died in 1997.
One diamond is called Bill's Field of Dreams. The other is called Heifer Stadium, because of an incident when some heifers got loose on the field.
Former major league pitcher Rick Helling is among the people who have played at Red Willow.
