Minot Daily News

FARGO (AP) - North Dakota farmers planted about 88,000 acres of potatoes this year, an increase of about 5 percent over the year.

The Agriculture Department says russets account for nearly half of the acreage. Whites, reds and yellows make up the rest.

North Dakota is the sixth-leading producer of potatoes among the states, accounting for about 5 percent of the nation's production.

Acres nationwide this year are estimated at 1 million, also up 5 percent from 2011.
