The Minot High School FFA chapter attended the 83rd annual North Dakota State FFA convention in Fargo June 4-8. Members competed in many different contests and won many awards.
In the Meats Evaluation contest, the contestants must quality and yield grade beef carcasses, judge different meat classes, identify different cuts of meat, do a team event, a written test and a problem solving practicum. Cole Hanson placed third, Hayley Horner placed 11th, Laurice Morningstar placed 12th, Garret Roen placed 14th and Josh Kauffman placed 28th. As a team they placed third.
In the Horse Judging contest, contestants must judge six different classes of horses and give a set of oral reasons on the classes. Ericka Hoff placed 21st, Shonda Gasmann placed 22nd, Kayla Rascoe placed 24th, Alicia VanSweringen placed 27th and Breeanna Llewellyn placed 57th. As a team they placed seventh.

In the Small Animal Care contest, contestants identify cats, dogs, fish, rabbits, parasites and take a general knowledge test. Alicia VanSweringen placed seventh, Shonda Gasmann placed 30th, Hayley Horner placed 49th, Jessica Brown placed 57th and Ashley Reedy placed 72nd. As a team they placed seventh.
In the Food Science contest, contestants do a food safety and quality practicum, a sensory evaluation, a team product presentation and a written test. Kali Sivertson placed 30th, Laurice Morningstar placed 31st, Brock Severson placed 71st, Ashley Reedy placed 108th and Haili Duchscherer placed 134th. As a team they placed 12th.
In the Floriculture contest, contestants have a plant identification, a customer assistance practicum, a corsage and boutonnire practicum, a written test and problem solving test. Anthony Pitner placed eighth, Kyle Frenette placed 12th, Jessica Brown placed 16th, Kevin Sivertson placed 18th and Haili Duchscherer placed 48th. As a team they placed third.
The Ag Mechanics contest, contestants build a wood project, weld, plumbing and electrical wiring. In the ninth grade Ag Mechanics contest, Levi Roen received silver. In the 10th grade Ag Mechanics contest, Brock Severson received silver. In the Advanced Ag Mechanics contest, Ethan Hanson received gold, Garret Roen received gold, Anthony Pitner received gold and Kevin Sivertson received silver.
In the Dairy Foods contest, contestants must identify cheeses, taste milk samples for impurities, do a written test, do a mastitis test and determine the fat content of milk. Jessica Brown placed 39th, Josh Kauffman placed 77th, Terrance Kirkland placed 131st and Levi Roen placed 163rd. As a team they placed 19th.
In the Farm Business Management contest, contestants take a written test and do a problem solving test. Cole Hanson placed 12th, Ashley Reedy placed 18th, Jordan Peterson placed 23rd, Ethan Hanson placed 30th and Laurice Morningstar placed 49th. As a team they placed fourth.
