Mavis Starr, 86, Cando, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 11 a.m., in Cando Lutheran Church, Cando. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, in the spring.

Mavis Eleanor Marilyn Johnson Starr was born Aug. 5, 1925, to Menus and Minda (Martinson) Johnson at Perth. Mavis attended the Monroe Township School for eight years. She graduated from Perth High School as valedictorian in 1944. She then attended classes at Minot State Teachers College and returned to teach at Oxford and Ellsworth Township schools. She married Glenn Starr at Rolla on Jan. 25, 1946. They lived in several locations in North Dakota and South Dakota where Glenn was engaged in elevator construction. In 1950 they began farming in Rolette County. In 1957 they bought their farmstead in Crocus Township, Towner County. They lived there until 1976 when they built their home in Cando. She was a member of Cando Lutheran Church.

Mavis is survived by her children: Ken (Sandy) Starr, of Minot; Carol (George) Gerlach, of Granite Falls, Minn.; Jerry (Suzanne Schweig) Starr, of Grand Marias, Minn.; Mari Jo (Randy) Parker, of Cando; stepson, Donald (Gloria) Starr, of Clackamas, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Starr; brothers, Maurice "Bud" Johnson and an infant brother.
