Michael H. Miller, a native of Minot, becomes the new superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., today.
During a change of command ceremony scheduled for this afternoon, Miller will take over the superintendent's job from Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler, who was raised in Bismarck.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced earlier this year that Miller was nominated for appointment to the rank of vice admiral and the new assignment at the academy. He also is a graduate of the academy where he started his Navy career 40 years ago.
Miller has been serving as Navy chief of Legislative Affairs at the Pentagon.
