Mark Birdsall of Berthold and Chad Hofstad of Starkweather were awarded top honors for their respective durum and hard red spring wheat samples at the annual durum and hard red spring wheat quality contest held by the North Dakota Wheat Commission. Nearly 100 samples were received and tested at the North Dakota State University's Durum Quality Lab and Hard Red Spring Wheat Quality Lab where they underwent a series of tests to determine the winners. Birdsall's winning durum sample was DG Star, a 2007 variety developed by Dakota Growers Pasta Co. in Carrington while Hofstad's winning hard red spring wheat sample was Glenn, a 2005 variety released by NDSU. The top winners in each category received cash prizes of $400, $250 and $150.
