Julius Asmundson

Julius August Asmundson, 97, of Towner, ND, formerly of Upham, ND, died at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, ND, the day after his 97th birthday on July 22, 2008.

He was born on July 21, 1911, in Layton Township, McHenry County, Upham, the son of John and Katherine (Johnson) Asmundson. He was raised in the area and went to school at the Layton Consolidated School. He farmed and raised cattle in Meadow Township, near Upham, all his life. After he retired he was still eager to help his neighbors with their cattle herds.

He married Christine S. Christianson on November 10, 1931, at Towner. He had served on the Melankton Lutheran Church Council while living at Upham. He moved to Towner in 1992 and joined the Zion Lutheran Church. For 12 years he was proud to be able to take care of himself after his wife died on July 12, 1996. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins on television.

Mr. Asmundson is survived by: his daughter, Lyla Jean, and her husband, Loren Juntunen, of DePere, WI. He also leaves 4 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Freda Record of Sun City, CA; and some cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; 2 brothers, John P. in 1974, and Asmundur "Mundie" in 1976; a sister, Margaret Magnusson; a granddaughter, Alivia Joswiak; and an infant daughter in 1933.

Memorial services: Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner. The Rev. Diane Krumm will officiate.

Louise Korfmacher will be the organist and Andy and Wyatt Joswiak will sing. Procession assistants will be Amelia Joswiak, Evan and Lauren Jane Juntunen and Molly McKenna.

Burial: Melankton Lutheran Cemetery at Upham at 12:30 p.m. (Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rugby)
