SHERWOOD – Last year Jenna Volk had only to roll out of bed and walk a block to school. But during her senior year, Volk had to drive 20 miles one way to the high school in Mohall.

The MLS-Mohall School District closed the middle school and high school in Sherwood last year, meaning that Volk and her four classmates at Sherwood High had to get used to seeing 15 new classmates and new teachers every day.

“I guess we all knew that it was going to come,” said Volk, who said it was a little sad that she wasn’t able to graduate from Sherwood High, but there were some pluses to moving over to Mohall, too.

“Being around new people, hanging around people I never even thought of hanging around with,” said Volk. “A lot more friends.” The girls basketball team practices quite a bit in the gymnasium at Sherwood High, which is still in use for athletics.

Volk said a few teachers from Sherwood came over to Mohall with the students, so there were some familiar faces along with the new teachers.

Volk keeps busy, playing on the basketball team, working as senior editor of the yearbook staff and keeping involved in the Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter at MLS-Mohall. Since her parents farm, she works with her family instead of having an after-school job.

“I’m the gofer,” she said, working at whatever needs doing. “I’m around 24/7.”

When she goes away to college at North Dakota State University this fall, where she plans to major in business, her brother will have to pick up the slack.

“I won’t miss it,” she said.

She said she’s getting a little nervous now that the end of the year is close, although she was really excited about starting college last fall, when that time was further away. She will miss her parents and siblings, as well as all the friends she won’t be able to see every day, but she’s also ready for a change.

“I guess it’s time for me to go and do my own thing,” she said.
