Theodore Roosevelt was a pioneer who wanted our badlands protected forever. The land was kept quite pristine by farmers/rancher pioneers until oil.

Having said that let me say I have not accepted the remnants of the drilling in the 50's and 70's. In addition to what is clearly visible look closely and you will see truck chains, long lengths of heavy cable, long lengths of heavy cable, assorted pieces of steel and other debris, sink holes from shallow and poorly buried pipe and patches of dead ground. Now add the Bakken activity. To speak favorably of the defacing of western ND and especially the badlands is to defy the wonder and beauty of nature itself. The adverse impact on wildlife is tremendous. Yes we need oil but much of the drilling is for export. We may never see energy independence without control of exports. It disgusts me to see such a destruction of nature as "change" and acceptable. Much of the oil activity is greed gone mad.

I really liked this letter. What a sense of optimism, which is a large ingredient in the pioneer spirit he noted. Excellent!
