the best way to control violence is to disarm all liberals and democrats... then we would have peace..

"Guns don't kill people, its people with guns that kill people." So gun control won't work. People control who own guns might. Put extreme high gun taxes on all weapons and ammo maybe they will self deport themselves! :-)

We should just go back to the “Wild West” days and have open carry laws. Let’s all just carry 44’s on our belts and have at it. Personally, I want a sawed off shot gun. Just how come those are illegal?

Tax cuts for votes.

There goes the neighborhood! So the answer is to just let it all happen. Everyone go out and buy more guns and load up with a bunch of ammo and maybe shoot their neighbor when he comes into your yard to ask for help when his car breaks down! No one will trust anyone because we won't know who is good and who is evil.

Mr. Moen it appears the next crisis is we have a bunch of drunks and drug dealers running around with guns in Minot! Great now we if we don't get killed by drunk drivers, we can get killed by drunken drivers with guns!

Really Jack? Do go on and on -- talking to yourself in different voices. It makes for fascinating reading.

Don't you think so?

Maybe.

Yes, indubitably.

Oh, I don't know.

For sure!

Jack, I think you missed the mark a little bit on this one.

The Democrats are trying to cause "mass ill informness" to get votes, but based on this opinion piece it doesn't seem to me that Steven Moen is all that likely to vote Democrat.

I'm sure the Obamabots will defend Obama's actions regarding the drone strikes, even if drones kill innocent women and children in Pakistan.

It is a slippery slope. It is defended as 'legal, ethical, moral and justified' to use drones to kill people. Nonetheless, it is still murder, call it what you want, but Obama is being served heads on platters.

It is NOT legal, it is NOT moral, it is NOT ethical, and it is NOT justified. It is unconstitutional. You do NOT kill people first and disregard due process.

It is NOT right.

Obama has done the wrong thing this time. He needs to play a round of golf and let it disappear into the memory hole.

And to think that it is being done.

Don't know what you want to call it, but it isn't peace.

A Peace Crisis? Is that an oxymoron, and yet, not?

Since Obama has already targeted and killed 3 Americans in Yemen, the Drone Crisis is with us now.

How come Obama can call drone strikes to kill people, even Americans, but wants to have gun control?

Guns for me, but not for thee says Obama.

Improve the federal background checks system. There are several items addressing this, like incentives for states to share information, requiring federal agencies to make relevant information available, and giving law enforcement authorities the ability to run a full background check on a person before returning a seized gun. Provide law enforcement authorities, first responders, and school officials with proper training for armed attacks situations. Needless to say, I don't think Obama envisions this training quite the same way the NRA does.

Nominate an ATF director. There hasn't been a director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives since 2006. Obama will nominate B. Todd Jones to the post. Require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations. Kind of a no-brainer. Start a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign. OMG, so we can still haz guns? YES, but he'd like us to talk more about responsibility and safety. Direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research gun violence. Obama is also calling on Congress to approve funding for this research. There's been a freeze on CDC research on gun violence for 17 years. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act doesn't prohibit doctors from talking with their patients about gun safety. The NRA inserted a provision in the law that says doctors don't have to do this; Obama is clarifying that it's not prohibited, either. Improve the federal background checks system. There are several items addressing this,

News & Views American Pride Obama Isn’t Taking Away Your Guns, But He Will Do These 7 Things Posted by Adriana Velezon January 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM .For the last time, President Obama is NOT taking away your guns. Simmer down, now! Let's come back down to Earth. (Oh who am I kidding -- I'll probably have to say it again and again.) Today the president introduced his plan to reduce gun violence. It's a set of proposed laws Congress could pass, if it can muster the cojones and valor, and a set of executive actions he could take.

Strangely enough, I did not see "revoke the second amendment" on either list!

Shocking, right? The way some people talk, you woulda thought that would be at the top of his agenda. But nope, it's a set of MODERATE proposals. And he's not even promising to do everything on the list. Some of the items don't even contain the word "gun" or "firearm." So let's see what's really there. . I know people of many faiths, and even a few atheists, who are upstanding members of society. I also know Christians who talk the talk all day long but don't walk the talk. Believing that every problem arises from allowing people to be something other than Christian is naive at best.

Freedom comes with responsibility, and problems come when free people fail to honor that responsibilty. Christian teachings offer valuable moral lessons to live by, but that is not the only source of those values. Any set of values or morals is only as valuable as the choice to live by them.

We've all heard the phrase "Chicago-style politics."

Was Saul Alinsky part of the history of the phrase, as well as Capone?

Or am I missing the boat as to why this phrase evolved in the first place?

subman, great post.

abcnews, Matt Negrin, 1/2012

"Alinsky, a Jewish Univ. of Chicago graduate who embedded himself with the Al Capone gang as a form of real-life study for his criminology degree — he told Playboy he befriended the mob’s top executioner by showing interest in a story about a “broad” in Detroit — eventually modeled his theory of confronting elected officials off labor unions’ methods. Though he had been dead long before Obama came to Chicago, his effect lingered: Gregory Galluzzo, one of Obama’s teachers, told Lizza of his respect for Alinsky, “I regard myself as St. Paul who never met Jesus.”

"It is clear that Obama and Alinsky shared a passion for organizing, if they differed on the means. In his essay, Obama wrote that "organizing teaches as nothing else does the beauty and strength of everyday people."
