‘The Shield’ heading out with a colossal bang

If the ramp-up this week is anything to go by, the FX crime drama “The Shield” is going out Tuesday with a colossal bang. For seven seasons, the bad boys of L.A.’s Farmington district Vic Mackey, Shane Vendrell, Ronnie Gardocki and Curtis Lemansky – collectively known as the Strike Team – have been a legendary force within their station house, all the more infamous for their dark dealings. Since it was instituted, the Strike Team’s main objective has been management of gang violence in the Farmington District. Mackey, team leader, was notorious for playing gangs against each other, skimming off the top in money laundering schemes, disappearing contraband and generally blurring the line between criminal investigation and criminal activity. And oh yeah, there was that thing in the pilot episode where he murdered an internal affairs investigator.

Live by the request of my colleague Craig Haupert I am blogging at the ND State Volleyball Tournament. Not sure if he really plans on reading it, but I think he and Heath Hotzler of the Forum were just trying to get rid of me... Well played Haupert. Here's the update. On the Class A side, West Fargo topped a scrappy St. Mary's team 3-0. The Saints had good chances to win both the second and especially third games and couldn't quite get it done. In Class B action, Langdon took four games to dispose of Lisbon. In the second Class A match, Bismarck High is on the verge of a sweep against defending champ Fargo South. The Demons won the first two games, but the third is close. Stanley is also down 2-0. I would like to see the Blue Jays advance, but they have some work to do. Stick that live blog in your pipe in your pipe and some it, Haupert.

Thompson vs. Kenmare state Class B VB tournament

State Class B VB Tournament First round Thompson (home) vs. Kenmare Defending state champion Kenmare is off to a good start. The Honkers lead 15-8 in game 1 after a kill by Steph Barnhart. Thompson has narrowed the gap, using an ace by Nicole Schumacher to pull within one at 17-18. Katie King comes up with four of the Honkers' last seven points as the Honkers win game 1 25-20. Thompson takes a 10-7 lead on a block Schumacher in game 2. The Tommies and Schumacher are keeping Kenmare guessing. They lead 15-11. Thompson pulls away for a 21-14 lead. It's officially a match. Tommies take game 2 25-18. Kenmare is finding ways to hit around Thompson's good block. The Honkers take a 10-5 lead on a King kill. Thompson takes a timeout trailing 12-5. Things are looking good for Kenmare as the Honkers take a 20-8 lead. Everything is working for them now. Kenmare takes 2-1 lead after winning game 3 convincingly 25-10.

Havoc at the Herb, Part I

This will by your Dakota Athletic Conference championship football game headquarters throughout the day. I will continue to update this file. Later, Craig will have the Havoc at the Herb, Part II with Velva and Harvey. Minot State vs. Dickinson State All things considered, the field doesn't look that bad. The middle is good, clear and looks pretty dry. The edges - well, they aren't nearly as good, but we got about an inch of rain and then 10 inches of snow. MSU will receive the opening kick, its short, kicking away from Johnny Lester, which will be a theme for the rest of his career. Beavers driving, but Nick Banks fumbles at the five. Dickinson's Bodie Tobin recovers. Jerel Hafner picks off a pass after MSU's QB Jon Meier was hit as he threw. Hafner returns it to the MSU 23. Block in the back moves DSU back to the 33. After two big catches by Zach Hepperle, Tyler Grosz scores on a 3-yard run. 7-0 Dickinson.
