Broadway in Bismarck: "Chicago"
September 8, 2008
Tickets are on sale starting Aug. 4 for the Sept. 19 performance of the hit musical "Chicago" in the Bismarck Civic Center. Based on Maurine Dallas Watkins' 1926 play about Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer, "Chicago," as we are told in the show's opening lines, is a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery. It first opened on Broadway June 3, 1975, and ran for 898 performances. Its current Broadway revival (on which the Bismarck show is based) opened Nov. 14, 1996, and is still running. In 2002, Miramax Films made a movie based on the Tony Award-winning musical. The box office success and subsequent multiple Oscar wins for the movie lead to the rebirth of the musical and touring success. Tickets, ranging from $27 to $52, can be purchased at the Bismarck Civic Center box office, by calling the subscriber hotline 355-1384 or online at (ticketmaster.com). "Chicago" is the first performance in the 2008-09 Broadway in Bismarck season.
