Looking at Class B poll and week ahead
December 10, 2012 - Staff Blog
Before we look at some of the key games for the week ahead, let's take a peek at the new media poll (first-place votes in parentheses):
1. North Star (10) 2. Beulah (3) 3. Cavalier 4. Dickinson Trinity 5. Oak Grove 6. Des Lacs-Burlington 7. Four Winds-Minnewaukan 8. Carrington 9. Rugby 10. Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky
In summary, not too much to complain about in the poll. Four Winds-Minnewaukan made the biggest leap, from No. 10 to No. 7. In my poll, I voted them fifth. Yes, they lost. But overcoming a 14-point deficit and taking a lead before dropping a one-point game to North Star is not a bad loss. It showed me they can play and I think the voters rewarded them for that.
Conversely, I don't agree with Oak Grove falling from No. 3 to No. 5. They lost a game, sure. But it was against out-of-state Hawley (Minn.), a team ranked eighth in Minnesota Class AA. I don't think Oak Grove's performance against a team from Minnesota is relevant to its standing among North Dakota basketball teams. Then again, it's just a poll and there isn't a BCS so in the grand scheme of things the rankings don't mean much.
Games I'm looking forward to this week:
-- Four Winds-Minnewaukan (3-1) at Harvey-Wells County (3-1), Tuesday. I want to see how FW-M rebounds from a tough loss to North Star. The Indians should be a fun team to watch all season long.
-- Bishop Ryan at Shiloh Christian, Thursday. The Lions (1-0) get their first real test of the season against a 1-1 Shiloh Christian team that fell out of the rankings after getting thumped by current No. 4 Dickinson Trinity. Ryan then gets makeup game at Watford City before playing at No. 9 Rugby on Saturday. One thing is for sure is that we'll know a whole lot more about the Lions after this week.
-- Hazen (0-2) at Watford City (1-1), Saturday. The Bison have dropped a couple of couple of tough games to ranked Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky and Des Lacs-Burlington and need to rebound this week.
