Class B roundup, Dec. 6
December 7, 2012 - Staff Blog
There were quite a few things on the Class B boys basketball docket Thursday. Here's what I noticed:
-- Garrison senior forward Mykle Rud is my choice for player of the night. The Troopers edged Beulah's junior varsity team 61-46 and Rud was the biggest catalyst in Garrison's offense. Rud scored 29 points and the Troopers improve to 2-1 in the early season.
-- Blowouts were everywhere: The top teams had no trouble establishing dominance. Also, facing top 10 teams is probably too tall a task for junior varsity squads. No. 1 North Star crushed Four Winds-Minnewaukan's JV team 89-35, while the FW-M varsity club, ranked No. 10, dismantled Devils Lake's subvarsity unit 104-47. In a couple of varsity-on-varsity contests, No. 2 Beulah beat Underwood 70-27 and Rugby, which received votes in the latest media poll, topped Rolla 81-27.
-- The Class B game of the night was a face-off between two out-of-area teams. No. 3 Oak Grove, out of Fargo, faced Hawley, the No. 8-ranked team in Minnesota's Class AA. The Nuggets from Minnesota edged the Grovers, 80-71.
What to watch for Friday:
-- No. 6 Des Lacs-Burlington, a team nearly everyone sees as the Region 6 favorite, begins its season against Velva. The Lakers should roll, but it will be fun to see how the DL-B's trio of returning junior starters (Tanner Holte, Cole Edwards and Chris Duke) look in their opener.
-- Hazen gets a couple of stiff tests this weekend. The Bison share a district with No. 5 Dickinson Trinity and defending state champ Beulah. TL-M-M received votes in the latest media poll. The Bison get TL-M-M on Friday and then play at No. 6 Des Lacs-Burlington on Saturday. A couple of wins, or even close games, would go a long way in serving notice that Hazen can compete.
