Gabriel Aubry's no good, very bad Thanksgiving

November 27, 2012 - Andrea Johnson
Think your Thanksgiving was bad? Gabriel Aubry got beaten to a pulp by his ex-girlfriend Halle Berry's new fiance when he took his 4-year-old daughter home after holiday visitation. Even worse, Aubry was the one who was arrested for battery, served with a restraining order keeping him away from his little girl and hauled off to jail.

I know, I know. I shouldn't be paying any attention whatsoever to the celebrity train wreck that is the custody battle between Aubry, a French-Canadian model, and Berry, a Hollywood actress.

But it's hard not to when our national media is so eager to cover these things and the stories appear in the Google headlines. I also sympathize with Aubry, since the whole thing sounds so much like a set-up and I don't like the idea of someone separating a father from his daughter without good reason.

The nasty Thanskgiving brawl is apparently part of the aftermath of the custody war over the little girl. Berry wants to move to France with her daughter and her new fiance, Olivier Martinez. She presented an army of witnesses that life would be safer in France and the paparazzi wouldn't be allowed to bother them there. Aubry fought the move tooth and nail, probably rightly fearing that he would be cut out of his child's life if Berry succeeded. A California family court ruled a few weeks ago in Aubry's favor, meaning Berry can't take that kid to France.

This is apparently all very upsetting to Berry and Martinez, though Martinez appears to be wearing a halo in his version. According to TMZ.com, Martinez claims Aubry threw the first punch when Martinez tried to offer him a truce and said "It's time we moved on."

Aubry, on the other hand, claims that Martinez and Berry showed up at his little girl's school play and Martinez whispered in Aubry's ear in French that ""I wish I could beat the (expletive) out of you right now. You're lucky we're in a school right now. We're going to take (Berry's and Aubry's daughter) right now and you're not going to follow us." Aubry further claims that Martinez is the one who started the fight the next day. He claims Martinez started screaming at him that the custody battle cost them $3 million and threatened to kill him if they didn't move to Paris. He allegedly tackled Aubry and started beating him when Aubry walked out to his car. Aubry was granted his own restraining order against Martinez and is fighting the order that is in place against him, keeping him away from his child.

All this was apparently in front of the kid, so none of them acted like grown-ups. It's probably also a high profile celebrity version of the sort of domestic drama that happened in households all over the country last week. I imagine many judges are busy this week dealing with all the Thanksgiving fallout.

If nothing else, the fight between Halle Berry, her ex-boyfriend and her new one, with the poor child caught in the middle, is a really good example of the damage that can be done to kids when adults act like children. Let this serve as a reminder to "be good for goodness sake" this holiday season.
