MSU football coach Todd Hoffer could be reinstated at Minnesota State-Mankato

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Minot State football coach Todd Hoffner has won his arbitration case against Minnesota State-Mankato.

According to the report, on Wednesday an arbitrator ruled that MSU-Mankato was “wrong to dismiss Hoffner after child pornography charges were dropped stemming from nude video images of his young kids on his cellphone.”

Hoffner was placed on investigative leave for nearly all of the 2012-13 football season. On Nov. 30, 2012, the child pornography charges were dismissed. The university revised Hoffner’s title to assistant director of facilities development and relegated him to an office on the far side of campus. On May 6, 2013, MSU-Mankato fired the current Beavers coach.

Hoffner filed his grievance against the university through the Bureau of Mediation Services.

Following Wednesday’s ruling, Hoffner now could be reinstated at Mankato to complete his four-year contract. Mankato is responsible to pay the difference in salary should Hoffner elect to remain at Minot State, and pay back an "improper" 20-day suspension in Jan. 2013.

Melodee Hoffner, Todd’s wife, told the Star Tribune that her husband’s return to Mankato “is under discussion right now.”

Neither school officials, Hoffner nor his attorney, Christopher Madel, were immediately available for comment.

Hoffner was hired on Jan. 30 to replace Paul Rudolph, who resigned to take the offensive coordinator position at the University of North Dakota.

Notes: Since then, Hoffner has hired Bryon Thomas as the defensive coordinator and Chris Brunkhorst to coach the defensive line and strength and conditioning. ... On Thursday, Brian Boerboom was announced as the program’s new offensive coordinator. ... Boerboom spent the last eight seasons coaching the offensive line at Southeast Missouri State, a Football Championship Subdivision school. ... Hoffner's parents, Arlene, 80, and Leo, 82, live about 90 minutes from Minot in Esmond, N.D.
